TIDEWAY SAILABILITY

Tideway is an integrated sailing club whose aim is to introduce disabled people to sailing dinghies on Greenland Dock and the Thames, with visits to other Sailability groups round the country. The sailing can be either for recreation or competitive sport. There is a full training programme for those who want it up to and including instructor level. Membership is about 60% disabled and 40% able-bodied. Everyone is a volunteer to make sailing happen
and to attract others.

Picture of DinghyTideway was started in 1981 by a group of disabled people on the Thames at Greenwich and came to Surrey Docks in 1990 when the present fully accessible Centre was completed. Tideway is currently (2008) developing so that there will be three days sailing every week in the season (April - November) instead of two - Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. There is also a 5 year project called 2sail 2012 which aims to get 20 young Londoners, 10 blind and 10 sighted to learn to sail from scratch with the aim of reaching the Paralympics.
