HORNAFRIK INTEGRATION PROJECTS

The overall aim of Hornafrik Integration Projects is to improve the quality of life of the Somali community in and around Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, by providing support and information for this disadvantaged community.

Homework club/Supplementary classes

Our supplementary classes still remain one of the most popular activities we carry out. The programmes mostly involve Somali speaking tutors who run sessions to provide practical support on key areas of the curriculum, including ICT, maths and science. This has been running for 4 hours on Saturdays and for 4 hours on 2 evenings during the week.

The project also provides Sport activities and training for Somali children, mainly in free parks, like Southwark Park and Burgess Park. However, we regularly hire indoor sport facility for once or twice a week at Millwall community scheme.

Family/school liaison work

We also provide school/family liaison work for the Somali families in Rotherhithe and Bermondsey. This explores Somali pupils' overall performances in schools in Rotherhithe and Bermondsey.

ESOL/ICT For adults

The project also provides ESOL classes for Somali adults. This is 2 days per week for 3 hours per session, focussed on the provision of basic ESOL, ICT and Maths foundation to Somali adult refugees, people with language barriers and/or no formal educational background and adults with special needs.

Our ESOL training is focussed on pre-entry level and it is normally about 20 weeks long. Basic ICT skills are also offered, as part of this programme, at beginners and intermediate level. For instance, in our ICT classes for adults, we cover all the basic IT issues. This runs for 4 hours a week.

Community Development

Facilitate Group/individual support sessions for isolated community members to provide free counselling and one to one support in Somali language. Also we provide a Drop-in service where users receive advice, information and support on a range of issues.
